Some Mackinac Island & John French News

    Hey There!

If you’re an artist, you may be interested in this bit of news.

You may recall that in June 2023 I visited Mackinac Island for the Lilac Festival and Poster Contest. While on the Island, surrounded by view after view of inspiration, I took a lot of photos to use for future paintings.

Here are my first two paintings I created after the little trip to Mackinac Island; “Peddling Up Huron Steet” and “Making Deliveries”

Later, my fellow artist and friend Kendra Nelson visited Mackinac. She visited some galleries (which I didn’t have time to do) and name-dropped me in one. Kendra encouraged me to contact The Pointe of View Gallery.

So I got ahold of the gallery owner, Jennifer Callewaert, and sent her pics of my two Island paintings, and she loved them! She agreed to show them for the last couple of months of the tourist season.

Well, they both sold by the end of the season! Jennifer told me  “Peddling…went to a longtime island family and has a good home. The Market Street painting went to a cute Ohio couple.” Wow!

I spent some of my cold Michigan winter painting warm Mackinac Island pictures to send to Pointe of View for the 2024 season. See them all here!

  • A Living, Breathing, Painting, Window Display at Gallery on Fifth!

A Living, Breathing, Painting, Window Display at Gallery on Fifth!

The Gallery on Fifth is promoting this event as “Artists in the Window -watch our artists work live in our front window.”

On Saturday, December 16th, my wife and I drove up to Calumet so I could be a window display!

I wanted to participate in this event because I thought it would be a fun way to connect to a different set of potential art collectors. Plus, I hadn’t yet met the new owners since they took over. From their website: “In May of 2022, Morten and Kristi Haugland of Destination Calumet purchased the business and the building as part of their plans to revive Calumet and make it a real destination for aesthetes and artisans alike.”

A week before the event, I roughed-n a scene of Haven Falls, one of many waterfalls in the Keweenaw Peninsula. This would give me a head start on the piece, as well as provide a teaser or preview on social media posts.

Once I was set up in the window, I got to work. I watched people walk by. I smiled and waved. I invited them in.

These little girls in the photo to the left were quite inquisitive! Turns out their mother was also an aspiring painter, so we had a good chat too.
If you look closely, you can see another young lady on the outside looking in. A little later, she would come in too, and we chatted about painting.

I was able to finish the painting, and leave it at the gallery. It’s available for purchase, but it won’t be dry for a couple of weeks.

On November 9th, I got up a little extra early and met TV6′s charming personality Tia Trugeon, along with cameraman Robert, at Zero Degrees Gallery for a LIVE interview!

Like I said, it was live. So if I messed up, there was no fixing it. But I didn’t really mess up; it’s easy for me to talk about my art!

The news crew put together a nice little article that includes the two segments from my interview. I’ve linked it below.

  • Evening Glow from two sketches

    Evening Glow from two sketches

Sometimes, you miss a fleeting moment, or it can’t be captured during a single plein air session.

The painting featured above is a blend of two plein air sketches, crafted into one studio painting, stitched with some fun colors. The resulting studio piece captures the fleeting mood and atmosphere of a scene I had experienced a few weeks before.

I live in a small town that, in its heyday,  was a mining community.  We’re surrounded by scenery that whispers of the iron mining glory that once was. There are abandoned buildings, half-hewn hills of stone, and old roads and railways that have become trails for bikers, hikers, and artists.

Actually,  I’m the only artist I’ve ever seen on these scenic trails.

I’ve biked and hiked them, lately with my Anatolian shepherd dog named Clyde, and my wife Kris.

One warm evening, Kris and I were walking Clyde in a field below a long ridge of granite covered with maple and red pine. The  setting sun, reflecting and refracting in the clouds, created a glowing, dreamy atmosphere.

I told my wife that I needed to come back and paint that scene. The next day, we hiked out again, this time with my little plein air kit.

Even though it was the same time of day, the sky was clear, and the light wasn’t the same. But I painted the scene anyway.

At left is the painting from that day. It’s a little 5” X 7” for $45.00

The moment was long gone, but I still had a nice little painting.

About a week or so later, our 6-year-old grandson came to visit. It was a rainy, stormy day, and we were out running around with him. I had put my plein air kit in the car, just in case a cool scene popped up. But the day was and just too rainy to paint …until almost the end.

Just as the sun was setting, the clouds broke, and the orange sun lit up the trailing walls of the storm clouds. I whipped out my plein air kit and started painting.

My grandson sat on the trunk of my car a watched me paint. We talked about the different colors in the clouds and on the canvas.  He told me I was actually doing a good job.

When I was done, he asked if he could have it. Of course he could have it!

This was the dramatic light that I wanted in the first painting.

So, I combined the two sketches. We artists do crazy things like that. Sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesn’t.

    This time it worked.

I took the opportunity to play with my out-of-the-tube-violets.  I also mixed some interesting purples by layering different reds over different blues, and vice-versa.

The warmly lit clouds pop from the cobalt blue sky, casting a beautiful evening glow over the ridge and the field.

Finally, I dressed it up with some Queen Anne’s lace.

The finished painting beautifully conveys the impressions and feelings I had on that golden evening.

I hope you like it as much as I do!
